I need to setup for our small network (12 users), internet access for the internal network (Proxy), internet e-mail, and remote access to the network from multiple sources (dial-up, DSL, Cable). We have Win NT4 Server (SP6a) with MSExchange Server with all static IP's (10.x.x.x). I am looking for solutions to provide these items and have security (firewall) included with a still to be purchased DSL connection. It appears to me that I will be best servered by adding a second NIC to the server to isolate the DSL, but there is confusion as to the DSL router that will work and if it has firewall built-in that works. Any caveats or suggestions would be appeciated!

Crap I just wrote you a book and I dumped it by jumping to a different page. Here it goes again the a bridged version.

Think about an upgrade to ISA server. That's the new Proxy Server. It provides firewall and proxy services.

DSL routers usally are provided and lack good firewalls and are not always easy to configure.

Both Proxy 2.0 and ISA server need special packet filters to open the VPN ports (1723 for PPTP). You can find the info at Microsoft. ISA has a wizard Proxy does not.

You need the second NIC in the Proxy the only other way is to bypass your proxy server alltogether and do NAT on the router and plug it in to the backbone of your network. You will have problems with VPN and NAT with a low end router. I will check back if you need more info?
