Can we connect a windows nt 4 workstation to a 2000 domain controller?.

I also kinda tried and got stumped.........got help earlier to add a 2000 client to the DC and it worked like a breeze....

I heard somewhere that you can't, and I just want to get a second opinion......mixmode....

Yes you can definitely join NT workstations and member servers to a 2000 domain.

Yes, what they were probably talking about is having a NT domain controller on a domain with a W2K domain controller. Prior to Windows 2000, there were primary and secondary controllers. You were only allowed one primary domain controler, (PDC), but you could have numerous backup domain controlers. Once W2k came out, they became Domain Controlers. So, if you have a DC on a w2k network, you can't have pdc's or bdc's, as they no longer exist. You can have NT workstations join a w2k domain, and 98, xp, w2k, maybe even me if you really work at it. Good luck.

any help would be really great

2000 server newbie

if u mean for the NT4 worksation it has as one of dns lookup the address 192.168.10.3. This is the address of the win2k DC.

The server DNS setup I would not be to clear as it was set up by someone else and I am just trying to catch up where they left off. I could rebuild it but they have done too much on the server which I have no documentation about.

From the address it's a small network. Although Getting win2000 machines to hook on the DC was ok, not all machines on the network are able to handle 2000 so I want to put in nt4(make my life easier to manage the machines on the network)

2000 server newbie

On the nt4 machines there is a file called the lmhosts file.
Try to edit this file to reflect the w2k pdc, then they should be able to find it........

no worries u jogged me memory, I had totally forgotten about the Lmhosts file until u mentioned it so after a quick bit of editing and an nbtstat -r, I hooked up no problem......
