Hello,

Our ISP has recently set up an ADSL connection to our LAN. We have an Alcatel Speedtouch 510 router connected to a Windows NT4 (SP6)Server and a Firebrick Firewall. The server becomes unreachable (cannot ping or VPN) outside of office hours or during periods of inactivity. The connection to the server appears to time-out or go to sleep. Our ISP states that the ADSL router and firewall are pingable 24/7. Has anyone come across this problem before ? Any suggestions would be welcome ?

LAN>SERVER>FIRWALL>ADSL ROUTER>INTERNET

Thank you.

Yes, Im gonna take a guess and assume that your are using probably a speedtouch home. Or at least one with a dialup connector. The problem is in the winsock connection to the device, its unclear from there as to exactly what is the problem but the connection routing drops or get in error in the routing table that sometimes clears and sometimes won't, usually requiring a reboot of the unit and reconnection to the provider.

What you need to do if this is a always on connection, asp your ISP for a Speedtouch 510 router. This provides the connection for you so there is no need to deal with dial ups and it has proven a solid connection for me. You will have extra options also with this unit. Completely configurable firewall. You must be a little familiar with TCP/IP to do it but its all able to be done through telnet. Yes for most users the html interface is enough to configure the basics, but if you want it all download the CLI reference on alcatels site and the sky is the limit. good luck!~

Hi emerce2000,

Thanks for your reply....The ADSL router in question is a Speedtouch 510 model. but the connection still times-out. The ISP has tested the line and the Router is always on (pingable). The network card in the server that is configured with the public IP address seens to time-out or go to sleep. The only work-around which seems to work is to have a web page running on the server which refreshes every few minutes. Any more ideas ?
