Ive been reading some old threads on this and the suggestion is to make the new box a BDC to enable the copying of user accounts and SAM etc

Fine so far, but I need the new box to have the same computer name as the old one (due to the set up of loads of software at my main site (5 site Wan Multiple Master Domain), how do I do this. Can I change the name at the end of all the migration - I seem to remember this is not possible.

Cheers

This is a pretty poor suggestion but could you rename the current PDC with a temporary name (eg OLD_PDC) and then rename the BDC with the name of the current PDC (eg NEW_PDC), then rename the OLD_PDC to the name you want it to be (eg NEW_BDC)? I'm guessing you're going to be doing this when there are very few people logged in anyway so it wouldn't have a really big impact. It's just a suggestion, not a great one but...!

Good Luck :-)

Magicka - Yes. The simple answer to your question is "Yes, you can rename the PDC/BDC any time you want" (according to M$).

With NT4, you can rename the machine or the domain, but cannot change the domain that it is a member of.

What I mean is that you can rename the domain from OLD to NEW (never tried this, not sure what happens to the BDCs), but you can't take a BDC and move it from domain OLD into domain NEW. Cheers,
Sam
