NT hang on shutdown on IBM 380Z Thinkpad

Not that this is the case, but many of my users want NT on Laptops that officially do not support the OS. I will install but sometimes auto shutdown is not there. I assume all the P&P options are turned off in BIOS? If all the basics have been covered, then turning it off manually might be a small price to pay for the OS install. If this particular IBM does support NT as an OS, check with IBM and see what they have to say, I have seen there tech forum and it looks good. I personally do not use IBM laptops so i cannot offer more than this

I'll start by saying that notebooks suck. There are a lot of issues with persistent connections on notebooks running in offline mode. How long are you giving it to shutdown. I've got a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with NT4 on it. I had everything set up and running fine, then a day later it started taking 2 1/2 minutes to shutdown. The 'writing files to disk' box comes up at least twice with long pauses in between, but it eventually does shut down.Haven't figured that one out yet. <br>

Update about my Tecra that may apply to this problem:<br>

We have the Tecra set up with an internal CD and an external floppy. The machine shut down fine with the floppy plugged in and took forever with the floppy disconnected. Turns out we had the virus scanner configured to scan the floppy drive at system shutdown. Without the floppy drive the system went into a major spin cycle on a time out.<br>

If I remember rightly IBM Laptops require their own PCMCIA.SYS supplied with a utility called "SystemSoft" Although the PCMCIA will work with MS's system file it can prodduce some really odd results and at the strangest times. Can I siggest maybe try downloading the latet SystemSoft from IBM and install that, again if I remember rightly, the new file in System Soft is alot smaller than the MS version, also when you next apply maintenance you need to keep a copy of the SystemSoft file to copy back into your system overwriting the one from MS. I get blue screens if I leave my PCMCIA network card in on my IBM laptop if I dont follow this process.<br>

3. Reboot<br>
(if I still get a bluescreen, then I assume NT has "fixed" the non-NT file and recovered its own one, I then remove my network card, reboot, recopy the IBM pcmicia.sys and reboot adding my card back in again)<br>
Its a pain but it works for me.

OK, here is the latest situation.<br>

To rule out hardware, I swapped the hard drive into another machine. It still did the same thing. To rule out networking, I booted it as a stand alone. It hung. I booted it onto the network and logged on as local admin. It hung. I booted it without any network connections and logged on as local admin. It hung.<br>

I set up a no network profile which loads without any network support - it hung on boot.<br>
<br>
The virus scan had been running scan floppy at shutdown. That is now disabled. <br>

I am at the end of my tether. I have tried all of the other posts above, any more ideas before somebody on the street gets a laptop on their head?
