I have an NT4.0 (sp 6) machine that blue screens on a regular basis whenever I am running any software that is displaying HTML content. Usually is happens in MS Explorer, but HTML based help files also cause it. I have downloaded the latest Explorer, and even changed memory cards - but I am no techy and don't know what else to check. Do anyone have any ideas?

some additional info: blue screen info that popped up when I just went into explorer:

first two lines say:
*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xF4582FFA,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)
PSGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I have another tidbit to go on - checking my system log reveals a bunch of Dhcp warnings ("DHCP received an unknown option 000 of length 255.") that's one example. there are about 15 of these warnings all timestamped 11:33:57, I believe when I blue screened -

The most recent entry is a Save Dump - which was posted when i rebooted - it reads "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xf4582ffa, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows NT [v15.1381]. A file dump was not saved."

What is DHCP? Could this be the source of the problems?

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

A DHCP server (same as a standard NT server but with additional services) will hand out IP address to machines as they become connected to the network. This saves having to reserve IP addresses for each machine when sometimes a machine will not even be connected.

Is the server you're working on configured to be a DHCP server? If so there should be a DHCP service running on it. Check it and stop it if you don't need it running.

Secondly has you Windows NT installation been configured to use a DHCP server? When NT was installed you should have been given this option and given setup the name of the DHCP server to use. If you haven't given the correct information or it's trying to retrieve DHCP info from the wrong place this could be why you're blue screening. Regards,

Stevepic,

I have seen similar stop blue screens that are video card related (especially cirrus logic cards). You might want to reapply service pack 6a and make sure you are running the most cuurent driver for your particular video card. You may also want to consider changing the video card and see if this corrects the problem.

JJayUK -
Can you give me a little more information on DHCP. I am running an NT workstation in my home office. I have a laptop that is networked to it so i can pass files back/forth. It is not connected to a server. Do I need DHCP running?

epohl -
have tried the video some things w/ video drivers/cards - I have one made by intel. not sure if this may be the issue. I'll try it next if the DHCP thing is not the problem.

Thanks to both of you.

JJayUK - I stopped the DHCP service and it knocked out my email/internet connection. I have a cable modem and it likely uses DHCP to connect to the service provider, i would guess.
