The W3 HTML validator tells me it's not valid, but it shows no errors. Am I missing something?

When you visit the validation page, you can over-ride the doctype to validate against a specific doctype. I did not see HTML 4.1 listed in their supplied drop down menu. This may mean that they don't support validating the specific doctype that you use.
I recommend setting all your tags to lower case and going for XHTML 1.1 strict support.
