Not another question about autonumber 1

I have read all the FAQ and a lot of the advice about autonumbering.
I am a very slow coder but good at perservering.
I don't think that their will be two people trying to enter data at the same time so I am tempted to use the "max" option which is mentioned.

Q1, How could I lock the database if I did this

Q2. I would like the user to see the Order Number when the form first opens on a new record.
How can I do this when I use some of the coding options which only create an Order number at completion time.

Q3 I did see a solution using macros but I couldn't follow it too well - anyone tried this.

q1, what do you mean by 'lock the database' and 'did this'?

Yes - but as the quetions are all closely related I thought I would get te pain all over in one go.

By 'lock the database' I mean only allow one person to use it at a time' and by 'I did this' i meant 'If I exposed it to a multi-user nework'. In one of the pieces I read it warned that even on a single machine a user might stsrt the application twice whch could cause problems with setting An Order number.

Maybe this is usefull
You can lock the table/records in the attached form in the Record Locks-propery of the form. It gives you three options
- no locks; in a single user environment
- edited record; in a multiuser environment, if someone is working on a record (not the whole table), that record will be locked for other users
- all records; locks all records
