HI,

I'm trying to change a password on a user account using win 2000 pro on a labtop. We use win 2000 server via the active directory. When I change the password at the server it says this passwords has been reset. So I go try and login at the machine and it just hangs for a long time before saying this password is invalid. Then I try the old password and it says the same thing. Now if I go back and reset the password back to the old one it works fine. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Thx,
Ryan

How many domain controllers do you have ? Are they spread across remote sites ?

I wonder if this is a replication issue.

Cheers,
Will.

We do have 2 DC's and I know they are set up to mirror each other. I also know that this labtop has to ip addresses so they can travel between the two locations and access the network.

How often does DC one check with DC two that they are the same? If I understand correctly you have two DC's that mirror each other. You change the password on one DC for the user account in question, and are unable to log in. so you change it back and know you can log in. Sounds to me like you are not logging into the DC that you change the password on. What happens if you try to set the password and log in using the old password. IE if the password is Password1 and you reset to Password2, however you login using Password1, what happens. If you are able to log in changes are you need to change the password on the other DC.

Once I change the password none work. Like changing it to pass2 and using pass1 will not work. I know when I do updates to the intranet site we have the other branch can see it almost immediatly. We have changed to passwords and let them set overnight and still we have the problem. The only variable I can find is that on most computers that work the policy setting for password is set to remember 1 password and on the machines that don't work it's set to 0...I have this set as the default domain policy to remember 1. Why are these machines not taking the gpo? This may not be it but a thought.

Thx,
Ryan
