We removed a current NAV using add/Remove programs in control Panel.. but when I try to reinstall it says that a recent uninstall was detected and windows needs to reboot to allow reinstallation (or words to that effect..)
Have restarted several times and still cannot get the program to start Install without this message..
N.A.V does not appear anywhere as far as I can see.
Any ideas??

Check Norton's site on how to properly remove AV. Norton is a real pain in the butt to get rid of. You basically have to search the registry and delete all instances of AV.

It WAS 2004... but like I reported, too big a pain to put up with... it was probably compounded by the fact that it was originally installed under Win ME and then upgraded to XP Home.. unsuccessfully uninstalled in XP..
Tried all the fixes.. but left it as it was and installed CA VET which works just fine, even in safe-mode and from a line command (if Fat32).

Thanks for all the support..

For future reference, there is a program on the Norton CD to assist in removing "diffucult" un-installs.

Norton AV 2004 leaves stuff in this folder after un-install: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

I was able to reinstall Norton AV after manually deleting the folder.
