Hello,
I have a Nortel CS1000 that was pulled from service but already programmed. I am trying to test some 1220E and 1140E Nortel phones by plugging them into a Cisco 3550. I am not sure how to administer the 3550 so that the DHCP on the phones and CS1000 can speak to each other and light up the phones.

These are some IP addresses configured into the Nortel CS1000 server.
137.135.128.253 Call Server
" " " .19 Signaling Server
" " " .10 Media Controller Gateway
" " " .4 IP Telephony Node
10.12.97.20 Node IP
10.12.97.19 Signaling Server Node
10.12.97.4 MCG32S card

I think I need to program the Signaling Server Node into the initial configuration of the Cisco 3550 as the primary interface. When I do nothing happens. I also think I need to configure the 3550 with these commands but can't seem to access them when I enable the Cisco at the "#". I gave the Cisco the name NORTEL. I have gone in and added these commands before I added the switch addresses.
interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1Q
mls qos trust cos

I may have to go in and flash_init and start over with the initial configuration. I'm not sure how to set the port speed in the 3550 without exiting the configuration but it won't let me when I'm in the NORTEL#. I think I'm close but maybe way off!! Please help! Thanks.

Here is more information from the 3550 that I entered.
NORTEL#config

you have to add the scope in the dhcp server so that when the set tries to boot the dhcp will populate the proper info scope 120 runs in my mind but not sure..

sorry it is option 128 for the phones
do a google search and you will find a how to.

Do you have a cisco cable to plug into the 3550?
Do you know the en password for the 3550? If not you will need to do a factory reset on it.
I would do the reset anyway.

en
conf t
ip dhcp exclude-address 10.12.97.1 10.12.97.49
ip dchp pool nortel
network 10.12.97.0 255.255.255.0
exit
exit
wr

this will create a VERY basic dhcp scope in your switch and save it to memory.

Thank you mjwald! That did create some progress for me however the phones are still not up. While booting the phone came up with these messages on the screen.
f/w version 0625c4l
dhcp parse error
not it says...
dhcp server unreachable.

2) other phones have the following messages on the display.
New IP is assigned!
Starting DHCP
They don't go past that. If I do the factory reset can I only put in the settings you gave me instead of having to enter all of the other commands that I entered previously?
After getting into the boot up mode and flash-init command, I believe it's just a matter of deleting the config. Is there more to it than performing the steps for this?
delete flash :config.text

From your posting, the phones are using C4L software which is ancient.

I deleted the flash and then I put in the values and commands that you gave me mjwald. I am still getting the same messages on the phones.

I haven't configured anything else. Any other suggestions? Should I program what I had into it before?

I am using an ethernet hub with with the TLAN and ELAN from the Signaling Server plugged into it along with the 1E and 2T from the MGC card. The ELAN from the Call Server is plugged into the CE port of the MGC and the TLAN is plugged into the CT port of the MGC.
From the ethernet hub I have a cat 5 cable plugged into the 3550 POE. I think this is correct for an SA server.
