I have an option 81C that is completely lit up (RED) - cannot initialize the switch or do a manual restart- completely turned core off and on- still nothing but RED lights---any suggestions????

Turn all your shelf's off, then power on one CPU shelf and see what prints out on your terminal

this holds true for any switch i've ever seen..

power down, back out all cards you don't need.. on an 81c i would back out the cni's and leave both cmdus and cpu's seated... connect to the rear of the cpu shelfs and power up. see which one boots...

power back down, plug in one cni.. see if that comes up. just keep adding cards...

Also be sure to run a capture of the TTY session as well. If it is not booting, there will be tell tale error codes that Nortel or your maintenance provider will be able to decode to see what the problem is.

Something is broken someplace, and chances are the system is being pretty verbose about what it is, you just have to watch the codes.

So what happened, other than losing a night's sleep?

I'm just curious. These are the best times to really learn something about the system.

I had a consultant come out and he tried to initialize and manual restart the switch and nothing- made a phone call and then flipped the toggle switch in the maint. mode on both shelfs and rebooted the shelves- and they came back up- then just had to bring all the PRI's and D channels back up- - then had to log into Meridian Mail and enable all the DSP ports. Took him all of about 30 min. Needless to say- I was a wee bit frustrated!!!

Thanks to everyone for your help!! I really appreciate all of you!!

your more them welcome.. it's good to go through that at least once.. lock the door, take it to min config and start adding groups back.. 30 minutes was a good time.. did he find the cause?

no- the original problem began with the Meridian Mail locking up and once I re-set the Meridian Mail- the PBX locked up, so we don't know what caused the problem- but I certainly know how to resolve it now - God forbid it ever happens again- LOL

I definitely don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but from personal experience, if you couldn't find the root cause to fix, then the problem will occur again.

But, like you stated, the next restore will be much quicker with what you have learned during this round.

It is a real good way, for a technician, to really learn how the system is put together and how different parts interact.

Ask your consultant to get into PDT, if they can, and pull a history report from the core. These are not erased after restarts and go back for months. This way they can see if there was a root issue that caused your outage.

John- it certainly makes me feel a whole lot better dealing with all these different PBX's just knowing you guys are around!! I just started out helping with the programming and then became responsible for 14 switches with no training at all what-so-ever. Alot of hands on learning!!!
I will definately have my consultant run a history report, so at least we know what caused the problem- Thank you again for all your help- I'm sure we'll be talking again soon!!
