I'm thinking of getting a NAM for my 8x24 with dr5. my question is does it matter what the release is? Which releases will work with my system?

Any version of NAM works with DR5

If the NAM has a fibre connection you will need a DS30 to convert from the copper ports
Just be sure to buy a copper NAM. As stated, all releases will work with DR5. The fiber to copper converters were flaky and slow, so I'd avoid fiber NAMs in your case.
