Normal Style Excel 2000

How does one change the "normal" style in Excel 2000, so that the change becomes the default in new workbooks. I am looking for something similar to the slash global - default command in Lotus. Thanks.

select Tools menu
Click on options
choose General Tab
change style

Click ok

Save the blank file with changed styles as a PERSONAL.XLS file in the XLSTART folder. Then go to the Windows Menu and Hide the file.

Yes, the Personal.xls works for retaining cell formats as defaults. However, I don't understand - how& why to hide the file. Thanks to both suggestions. Steve

The personal.xls file always opens. That's where Excel gets all its infromation and any common macros that may be attached to the file. If it's not hidden, it will always be visible, chances of it changing in error are greater, gets confusing as to which file you are working on (especially for me since I can only handle one thing at a time; I even stop to chew gum), etc.

Hi!

1. Redefine Normal Style in a blank workbook.
2. Save it as a template file called BOOK.XLT but save it into the system start up directory or alternate startup file location (Tools, Options, Genereal).

This will now become the default workbook template (File, New or New icon)replacing the conceptual built-in workbook template. In fact any non-standard features that you want to become permanently standard can be included in the definition of the template BOOK.XLT.

Thanks, I have made changes to Normal style in both Windows 98 and Windows XP versions, with the Personal.xlt file read-only so I don't write over it. Not being familiar with Windows program files, I used the find function to get to the XLSTART folder. Works great!
