We have users on the East Coast that access a server located in California. The open MS Word on the local client and access a document in California. The application doen't open the file or becomes non-response and locks up.
We have adjusted the "cache time out" on the server in California but still the problem continues.
Is MS Word not a WAN tolerable application?

Its fine but it depends how long it takes to download the file so varies on how much bandwidth you're using and how large the file is.

What happens when you open word first then try to open the file from within word, try a small test one first i.e. with the word "test" as the entire text.

Then work youre way up with larger and larger docs.

We do increase the cache time with some relief but it still times out ro become non responsive

How large is the file? Also how large is the WAN link?

The file is 25k and the smallest link is 3Mb attached to an ATM cloud OC12

How are you routing between sites?

Does this also happen with tiny excel files? What about a .txt file that you could open with say notepad?

Just a shot in the dark but could your firewalls be playing a part in this or perhaps desktop antivirus? Trying to scan the file as its opened?
