I have a server at work with the domain named "cad.engineer.local". It runs an Oracle DB and some other DB applications. My problem is when I want to access it away from work I have to do it by using the IP address and all the links in the applications point to cad.engineer.local as the addresses. Is there a way to alias cad.engineer.local to the IP instead? Thanks

I fixed access problem with a host file entry, now I need to come up with a way that our customers can reach it without having to edit their host files. Can some sort of script do this? I'm not an IT guy, but I have to be one at work.

If your clients are reaching your network via VPN, they will use your DNS server too, and the name will resolve, but if their DNS is only the outside world's, you will have to either have them access it by IP (the system would need a public IP) or give it an external name that maps to that IP, like cad.neiltekengineeing.com or something and have your firewall pass the proper ports through to the internal system.

I would recommed the VPN solution, since passing Oracle and SQL traffic across the public internet is a bad idea. There are too many exploits against open DB ports.

Actually the customers would be accessing the DB with with a web browser. The DB application is java based.

You could still have them open a VPN and then hit the internal web site over the VPN. You wouldn't need to worry about host files or DNS then.

Or you could do what I mentioned as far as setting up a public IP and a new public A-record in DNS for that IP and external users would hit that address.
