Hm. I have a 9000 running 10 and when I try to telnet in, I don't get a username prompt, but 3 password prompts. Er. I've never seen something like that before...
I have - but not usually with telnet.

With rlogin you can sometimes get just the passwd prompt.

I have occaisionally seen something like that on busy networks. If you press enter - three or four times - do you get a correct prompt then?
This happens regardless if I use a client app or telnet in from different unix boxes. I'm not running telnet -t on the hp.

The only thing I was going to suggest was the configuration of telnetd startup (TAC -- the -t option).

Have you tried the -l option when you run telnet itself? That explcitly turns off TAC.
User Access Verification is a response I see from our Cisco routers. Are you sure you are telnetting to an HP Unix system?

I wondered about that <grin> ..... bhostetler?
