Gateway Solo 2500 laptop - 266 - 86m mem - 2.1 gig HDD.
Laptop came with Win95. Reformatted and upgraded to Win98. Downloaded and installed utilities from Gateway. Everything works OK, but.... USB. Device mangler shows: Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Host Controller (complete with yellow exclamation point!) Check on properties, and get "The NTKERN VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)". Contacted Gateway service and was told this is a Win98 problem and "We don't service anything that the computer wasn't manufactured with". Tried removing and reinstalling the USB software from the Win98 CD. The bootup shows that the port is recognized and drivers installed. However, still same error. Anyone familiar with this error?

Do me one last look;
Boot into Safe mode and under System Devices in Device mangler, (first you'll notice things previously unseen, like possible multiple entries and codecs) and find Plug and Play BIOS Extension and view the Properties -- see a SYSTEM\DIRECTX\Swenum and \SYSTEM\Streamci.dll entry (or similar)...? I can't recall exactly (next boot i'll look in Safe Mode again..[smile]..but I'd install DirectX 6.0 atleast and 8.x at best for 98. Give it a shot. This is Win32 Streaming driver class

Also SYSTEM.INI
got the *ebios entry?...how about others?

Update:
I've re-installed Win 95. I had to fdisk and reformat. On reboot, the splash screen for "Go-Back" kept showing on boot! I used a debug script to totally clear the HDD. Installed Win 95 - spent hours getting USB to work (now I remember why I hated 95). Everything works OK. Now, I will upgrade to Win 98SE, and see what happens. I've found a few sites referring to USB problems when up-grading to 98SE. I'll post back after I up-grade. THE QUEST CONTINUES!

If I remember correctly, only Win95c had USB support and that was with the driver that is on the media in one of the other folders. If you installed correctly like an OEM, it may even be under OPTIONS\DRIVERS

Win95b (late release) and 95c. One file is on the OEM disk under "other", and the others are from the 'net. Microsoft used to have them on their site, but now they just tell you what you need! Let's see if they disappear when I upgrade to 98SE

OK, this is what has transpired: installed Win 95 - everything works. Up-grade to Win98 - Usb still shows on Device Manager, but Device Manager and Control Panel locks up the computer. Up-grade to Win98 SE - gets half way through (searching for Plug and Play) and system halts. Error message: Windows has stopped your computer to keep from damaging it. Your multi-function device (Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI bus master IDE controller) has some child devices using 32-bit drivers and others using compatibility mode drivers. When I continue, Windows loads, but primary and secondary IDE are both errors (yellow exclamation point) in device manager. With no secondary, I have no CD drive so I can't continue to install Windows. I guess the USB is being confused with IDE! So, I guess it's Win95, or Win97 with no USB.

Would a Pcmcia USB card solve the problem, or is that interface earmarked for something else?

Andy.

The 98 CDROM has mtsutil (\tools\somewhere)
find it and use it for NOIDE
OR
see this; and delete the NOIDE value in the REG

more info;

If the probs don't go away;
see this possibly, as it relates to cardbus conflicts and usb devices in 95b

go back to clean install with 98 CD

check this for changing the IRQs once you choose "change setting"

I'm going to re-install Win98 (clean). I was just testing to see if the ports on the motherboard worked.
Satrow: good suggestion on PMCIA card, never thought of that. I have two slots, (currently used for modem and LAN). ONWARD and OUTWARD!

Update:
Well, I re-installed Win98SE. I decided to follow satrow's advice on PMCIA. I followed all the steps I took the first time with 98, watching very carefully. Everything went OK: Win98 - "Go-Back" - 98SE - security CD - and everything works! I havn't put Norton SystemWorks 2003 back yet, so I'll try that when I get time. The only difference I can think of is when I was having trouble installing Win 95, I had to use that debug script to totally restore the HDD. It must have had residuals of the factory installation. Thanks for all the help, I guess it's true: when all else fails, go back to square one!

Yes, USB works now! The only thing left to do is anti-virus and firewall. I'll do those one at a time to see if they have any effect.
