When importing data using the DTS function, the operation cancels due to lack of space. Apart from the obvious, (which I have checked and dissmissed?) what could it be?

Just check your transaction log size also. May be you had set it to increase by %. Set it to increase by some relative high MB size. Because DTS keeps logging all the transactions in the buffer.
This might move you in right direction.
