Windows 98 SE the volume icon has disapeard fron the start bar an I can get any sound to play at all.

First, try going to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Multimedia. On the audio tab, verify that "Show volume control on taskbar" is checked. If you can get your icon back this way, verify that mothing was muted out before the icon was banished.

Check to see if you have a driver present. Go to start -> settings -> control panel -> click on system and go to Device Manager. Click on the plus sign next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

If there is anything there click on it and click properties. It probably says 'this device is not working properly' Chances are it needs a sound card driver re-installation.

If there is nothing there, it need a sound card driver
re-installation for sure. Find your driver disk or cd and install the driver files.

If you can't find your driver disks, make sure you know your sound card name and model (located on the card itself) and do a google search to find the file.

Post back on your results.

I'd also try rebooting. Leave the PC off at least 10 seconds to drain any charge from the memory chips that might linger.

You can also reinstall the volume control as follows:

Control Panel/Add Remove programs/Windows Setup/Multimedia//details/check volume control
