No network on 5Ghz

Hi,

I just connected my new router, linksys WRT320N but when I use 5Ghz instead of 2,4Ghz, i'm not able to see my network on my laptop NC6400 with a broadcom WLAN interface. I think the driver is causing the problem but I am not able to find other drivers who solved the problem. Any suggestion?

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but what are benefits of 5Ghz over 2.4Ghz? Is is merely an issue of speed but also security? Thanks.
 
The biggest advantage I see is the propagation. The range and signal intergaty of a 5GHz signal is a lot better than 2.4GHz. The other is throughput. You can cram more data in the same amount of time.

ll60630 - you mean integrity, well, yes, more due to the fact that there is less interference in the 'ether' (to borrow the archaic word for it)...

e.g. it has been known that microwave ovens, Baby phones, DEC (cordless) phones when used would drop out whole AP's for minutes, another reason is the over-crowding of the channels, which cause dropped connections and degradation of service...

as you can see that 'a' compared to 'g' is only slightly faster in the TYPICAL THROUGHPUT, this is due to the System spectral efficiency ((bit/s)/Hz per site), which is the same for both 802.11a and 802.11g...

There a doc on it here. It also touches on the difference in UK and US signalling (ignore that it says 11a, prinicples are the same). But of most interest is the lower regions on about penetration and scatter. It gets a bit more techie further on.

Hi Ben,

I just checked the settings on the laptop, but there is no option called AD HOC DEFAULT WIRELESS MODE.

The firmware from the router is still the original one, and there is no update available. I change the settings via the webbased method and with the application called Easylink Advisor. Both without succes. I also discover with an other laptop which is working fine with 5Ghz, that the performance is much better.

More suggestions?
