I am working on a machine for a friend and I am having a problem that is driving me nuts. This machine (HP Pavilion 6644F - not mine) was running Windows 98 for a few years, after this person had some serious virus/spyware issues I decided it was time for a rebuild. We decided to upgrade to Windows 2000.

When I initially built it the PS/2 mouse quit working after a few reboots. If I delete the driver from device manager and reboot it will work once, then die on the next reboot (I get a arrow in the center of the screen that dosen't move, and the buttons do not function either). Then I connected a USB mouse that worked fine.

I started jacking with the registgery trying to fix the problem, and needless to say I over-hacked and proceeded to rebuild. During the rebuild both the PS/2 and the USB mouse was connected into the machine. Both mice worked for several reboot sequences. When I shut down and booted up with the just the PS/2 mouse it didn't work again. If I plug in both mice, only the USB will still work.

I have tried multiple PS/2 mice, they are all Microsoft or MS Compatible plan mice.

I had this same problem. It turned out that the BIOS was old needed to be updated. What I found was that if you shutdown and then turned the PC back on (instead of rebooting) the mouse and keyboard worked every time. I just used this as a workaround until I got a new PC. Good luck.
