I have an old AMD K6 300, 128MB RAM, the lady is coming off AOL via Time Warner cable, she had no Internal modem, I have installed 5 types, all install, she meets all requirements, none would connect, either no dialtone error, or it dials and waits about 30 seconds before going to verify, then says you were disconnected, after fighting it a couple hours I called and asked if there were any data on the thing and she said format away, and after a clean re-install no modem will connect, and I have tried several ISP's not just one.

Has anyone ever experienced this? My Disk Based Diag. says the MB and CPU, etc are good and pass all tests, but a modem will not make a DUN that will connect,

BTW after formatting and re-installing I put a NIC in it and upgraded Windows 100% via my router, the thing really runs nice now, just cannot negociate a connection

Stupid question...
How about the phone line.
Swapped cables, etc.?
Do you have dial tone?
If the line has too much noise or lots of static, it won't connect.

I had this problem at my previous house. I lived about 1 1/2 miles from one of those 50,000watt AM radio stations. I could hear the radio over the dial tone!!
Adding some audio filters helped alot (the phone company provided them).

No such thing as a dumb question but as an old Telephone man who installed DMS 100's in Latin America for a number of years, yep I made sure there was dial tone,

But I did find the problem, the PCI bus is screwed up on the motherboard, it tests fine but NO pci device will work, not a NIC (I used an old NE2000 ISA to update windows) So after trying all these KNOWN good modems that installed fine and wouldn't work, I found an old ISA USR 56K and popped that one in and connected first try, she hasn't got V92, but with the 5X accel she called today and was telling me how happy she was, and how much faster it is over her old AOL so alls well that ends well.

If any of ya'll have this happen to you, save some time and try an ISA before going thru FIVE like I did :)

I keep an external available in the car for diagnostic purposes. At least they still have serial ports.

Most laptops nowadays don't.

I've been buying Toshiba Tecra S1's for all my techs (router & switch work) because they were one of the few laptops left that come with serial ports. but now they've discontinued them and replaced them with the M2...

Guess what, NO SERIAL PORT!!!

ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH

Hadn't run across the problem. Not that much into laptops. But they have kept on improving stuff to the point of being just about useless. Guess I'll have to keep my Chicony 386-20 for 15 more years.

The new ECS mobo's only have one serial port. I've had to add a serial card to get systems up and running. Haven't you heard: we're all supposed to use USB! Next is the problem for re-boot and anti-virus when there is no floppy drive (or port).
