Hello.

Suddenly when I turned on my computer today, the logon-screen didn't show my username. Infact no usernames did show on the screen, just the Windows-logo.

Safe mode = same

Last Known Config = no difference

Does anyone of you have any idéa on how to solve this as I cannot logon or do anything with XP

Thanks in Advance

If you can login as administrator, you can review and add users.

When you get to the log on screen where it presents no users, try pressing ctrl-alt-del a couple of times. This should present you with an old style logon box where you can type the username and password manually. Maybe it will let you log in that way

Hope this helps

netlogon service stopped?

try accessing it remotely from another machine (right click my computer, manage, right click on local machine, choose connect to another machine, then enter the computer name. Hopefully your machine isnt locked down too hard. go to services and see if the netlogon service is started.

you could also try repairing the install.. insert cd, boot to it, install windows and select repair, it will replace all the system files and should allow you to log in after that.

Ok none of that worked.

So I backed up the laptop and formatted the hard disk.

Installed a clean version of XP PRO.

Patched it etc etc..

Then on about the 5th boot the same problem RETURNED!!!!!

I am back at the start again after a totally new build.

Has anyone please please please got any idea's

It is beginning to sound like it could be a hardware problem or a conflict with some software you are loading after installing Windows.

To check your RAM.

Your Harddrive manufacturer will have free diagnostic tools to checkout the drive.

If you can load the Recovery Console from your XP CD try running Chkdsk from that.

curious what changed between the fresh install and the 5th boot.. any software or windows updates, maybe a local/domain security update? I know the windows update has hosed a couple computers here.. it somehow set everything in the c:\ directory to 0 bytes.
also a list of hardware in the laptop may help, though I've never seen a hardware conflict stop the logon, usually it causes a blue screen.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help on this.

It is a hardware error and the contestant that is causing all the problems is the MODEM

Thanks for all you help

You know, I have had so many problems with modems, I usually start looking there :)
