Hello,

I am new to Sun/Solaris. I recently purchased a SPARCstation20 with dual processors. After reading the install manuals and a Solaris 2.5.1 book, I decided to install Solaris on the SS20. The install went fine, my problem is that when I rebooted, there was no Windows Manager login screen. It rebooted, asked me for the root password and then a login name. I logged in as root, supplied the password, and it booted into Sun OS? I checked the /usr/dt/bin/dtlogin, but there is not one? Any ideas? thanks for helping me out.

did you do a full install? actually i'm not sure that CDE came with 2.5 ... so there wont be a /usr/dt directory ...

According to the manuals, the "End User install" included CDE as well as OpenWindows. I can't get a login screen at all. When I do the install, OpenWindows and the Solaris screen (the one with the multiple languages and says Welcome to) comes up. I run throught he install and then reboot. It goes into the root password screen and then asks login: I login as root, and there it stays. No Solaris login, no openwindows, nothing.

hmm, sounds like it's not getting into CDE ... try logging in at the prompt (if the logging screen is the same as now, i can't remember 2.5 well) on the login screen, under options, there is a command line login selection.

log in as root on there, if you can, and once in there you can start openwindows, or CDE ...

on 2.5 CDE was incredibly flaky, wasn't until 7 that it worked well.

I can't to the login screen.

I think that I am looking for /usr/openwin/bin/xinit

It has been a while since I was around 2.5.1 but I think CDE was installed separately after the O/S install. Look at some of the CD media for the cd containing CDE.

Solaris 2.6 CDE is done with the install!!
