No joy with Citrix Client & DirecWay Internet 2

We have a user in South No Man's Land and DirecWay is the only viable Internet connection available to them.

Terminal Services RDP client connects to the server at the main office with no problems, although it is slow.

We can't seem to get the Citrix PN client to be happy, and I'm assuming it's a latency issue. Where do I go to tweak the settings on the server to help with this?

We are running MetaFrame XP Feature Release 3, and publish the entire desktop. Users connect through the program neighborhood client where the server is identified by its IP address. An appropriate login/password is required before access is allowed into the network.

This is the ONLY user unable to make a successful connection, and the only satellite connection as well. Everyone else is lucky enough to have DSL, cable or adequate dial-up speeds. This user was only able to achieve a 24K dialup, but the lines are really bad and the connection would drop out often. The ISP says this is "normal" for dial-up customers. Get a life!

HERE IS THE SOLUTION FOR THE CITRIX/DIRECWAY PROBLEM:

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions!

When I visited the user's home/office, latency was hideous--but expected. Pings were something like 800ms to 1130 ms!

Are you ready for the big fix? In the ICA custom connection properties, under the OPTIONS tab, SESSION RELIABILITY was enabled, so I disabled it. Following that tiny change, the PN client hopped right on the server and joy was found again!

We like deep joy[wink] well done.

lb63640,

do you have any more tips for Direcway connection to Citrix?

Almost everyone tells me that it will not work...

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

From a desperate user in South No Man's Land..

me3304, I can verify that it DOES work because I have my one special user who is extremely happy doing her little tele-commute thing with the Direcway connection.

What are the specifics that you'd like to know about? I'll be happy to offer whatever help I can.

lb63640,

thank you, I appreciate any help I can get, I recently relocated, no DSL available here, so I purchased the Direcway System, I got their commercial dish and their "Business Internet Service", which they they tell me is the best they can get me. They also told me that I needed this setup to connect thru a VPN. It works extremly well for surfing the Internet, but I could care less about that. My average Satelite speed test is around 800 down and 225 up. Ping is horrible, between 985 and 1472.

We tried to connect thru a VPN, but pretty soon realized that it will not work over satellite.

So our outside IT contractor installed a Citrix Server at our corporate office, they are using the Citrix Meta Frame Presentation Server Ver. 4.0, with a ComCast Cable DSL connection, I am the only User....

They tested the connection via regular DSL connections, from several sites, and as they say " it flys"...

I can connect to the Citrix Server, but results are not consistent, it will work fine for a couple minutes or even a couple seconds, than it just freezes up.

I tried connecting thru the web interface as well as with a custom connection thru program neighborhood. I tried your tip and disabled the Session Reliability, and I seem to have better results thru the custom connection, but with the freezing up, it is still not workable. I actually have better results when I connect thru the phone line, but the phone lines here are bad as well, the maximum speed I can get is 26.4 kbps..... and a lot of disconnects..,

The thing that I really don't understand is that I can connect to another Citrix Server, this one is not in our office, I use it to access our Insurance, I just use the web interface to get on there and while it is considerably slower than what I was used to thru the DSL connection, it is consistent thru the use of the program.

I know that our IT contractor put his heart in this and worked very hard to make this work, but he tells me that the problem is the latency of the satellite signal, I think he is about to give up on me....

You say that your user is extremly happy, so I am assuming that she is getting consistent results. I was hoping that maybe you have some suggestions for what else we could try to make this work.

Question 1: which version of the client are you using?
Question 2: what OS do you have on your computer?
Question 3: how happy is the connection under a Terminal Services RDP connection?

Now, let's check a few property settings for your ICA connection to the office:

Under OPTIONS tab--

Make sure there is no checkmark beside the following:
use data compression
use disk cache
queue mouse
enable session reliability

Make sure SOUND is disabled.

You want AUTO for Speed Screen Latency

Checkmarks should be beside:
mouse click feedback
local text echo

On Windows properties, you might try 256 colors.

These are the optimal settings for my user. Your mileage may vary.

Let me know how this works for you.

1. In the program neighborhood ist says it is Ver. 9.0032649 (128-Bit SSL)

2. I have XP Pro on my computer (office is using a Windows 2003 Server)

3. Sorry....I am new to this, what is a Terminal Services RDP connection? need english translation

I made the changes to the ICA connection that you suggested, and connected, at first it seemed frozen, but after a couple minutes it worked, don't know how long for so, I had to disconnect, will need to give this some time to test on a longer session.

Thank you..

1. Good, you have the most recent version.
2. OK.
3. Citrix MetaFrame is essentially an overlay program that depends upon Terminal Services in order to run.

On your computer, go to Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->Communications

You will see a program called Remote Desktop Connection. This is the program I'm talking about. Plug in the IP address of your Citrix server and see how the connection holds out and how long it takes until it freezes up.

lb63640,

Thank you, I tried connecting with the Remote Desktop Connection but was unsuccessful. I talked to our IT Contractor today, he said that he would make some changes tomorrow to let me connect via Remote Desktop Connection.

I was connected most of the day today via the ICA connection, with the changes that you suggested. I did not freeze up today so at least I am one step ahead…. That is unless I just had a “perfect satellite connection” today…

It is still pretty slow so, long lag time between typing and data actually appearing on the screen, when I tried to save a File from the Office Server onto my local C: Drive “client drive” it takes between 10 and 15 minutes to actually specify the directory on my C: Drive, once there it actually saves it pretty fast.

Any settings that could be changed on the Server side?
