My Compaq Presario with new US Robotics modem can connect to an ISP's server at 44K. But I can't get on the Internet. I tried plugging in a couple of IP addresses but still can't get on the Internet. I emailed their tech support but they were no help. They suggested I call tech support. $1.95/minute. It's PeoplePC. They are bad news.

The email support had me check all the TCP/IP setting but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Your ISP provides the connection to the internet. If you can get to the ISP check with them on what you need to set on your computer. If they can't or won't help you change your ISP.

What error message do you get?

Reinstall your TCP/IP protocol (in network connections), make sure you reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall.

I re-installed TCP/IP twice. Didn't help. I get the following error message:

could not be found. Please check the name and try again.

Tech support at the ISP emailed me detailed instructions on what to check. Didn't help. They refer me to their $1.95/min. phone line.

Forgot to mention, I'm using Windows ME.

Since you can get email but not browse to yahoo I would look at how you have your DNS entries set up. See if you can browse to something if you put in the IP instead of the URL.

I'm on a DSL line with another pc. The problem pc is on dialup. I'm 'fixing' it for a friend.

I've got two entries for TCP/IP:

TCP/IP > Dialup Adapter
TCP/IP > Accton EN1207D Series PCI Fast Ethernet

I re-installed the first one twice. Didn't help. Should I do anything with the second one?

Duh..second one must be for the Network Adapter.

Does the modem connect with the network when it first dials up? If it does, can you post the results of an ipconfig /all while you are connected?

Not only is people PC bad news, so is Windows ME!

It just logs onto a server. Thats all. I'm getting to the point of telling him that I'll have to format and re-install. ME sucks big time. I noticed there is no command prompt in ME.

There's one in there somewhere, although its been awhile since I messed with the horror that is ME. Should just be able to type command or cmd in the run prompt and get it.

How bout this: can you use say, telnet or ftp (through the run prompt)?

My other question would be this: If you plug the machine into your DSL, can it hit the web that way? If you can, that eliminates a lot of possible causes on that machine, and it would almost have to be PeoplePC.

I've never used PeoplePC, but I do know that my mom is trying it. Generally speaking, everything my mom has ever picked when it comes to computers and ISP's has been a very, very bad thing...

I just tried that Winsock fix utility mentioned above. It didn't work. But I'll keep it in my tool box for future use.

I'll have to find my DSL software and load it on his pc to see if it'll hit the web.

Thanks for all the help.
