I have one Windows 2000 computer which has no desktop icons or start menu icons. O.K. That's a lie. The icons are there, but they are blank, white icons. The original color folder and program icons are not displayed. All the programs work, and multiple anti-virus and anti-spyware scans do not reveal the presence of any malicious software.

If I go to the desktop properties, I can reset the icons for the common desktop items (My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc), except for the 'My Documents' folder. As for all of the start menu, and other installed programs, even when I change the shortcut's properties and manually select an icon for the program, it is not displayed; It simply stays as a blank, white icon.

Anyone know how to fix this?

- James.

My memory is not as good as it should be, and neither is my memory.

I have forgotten more than I can remember

i would look at updating/replacing the driver for your video card before anything else.

Hello James
Give this a try, there is a file called "shelliconcache" it is located in C:\WINNT
When this file gets corrupted the desktop Icons look white open slow and act strange, Delete shelliconcache and reboot it will create a new shelliconcache, if all looks good reboot again and you should be OK

Good info 'tuco7', but after deleting the ShellIconCache file and re-booting twice, the icons are still not normal. Any other suggestions?

- James.

Im sorry that didnt work, that usually fixes most icon problems, here is one other thing you might want to try.
Open windows explorer and select Documents and Setting in there you should see All Users, Default User and the one you currently use, click on it and select desktop it should show all your desk top icons, In all users there are some icons not the full amount , default has none the main I use has them all.
If they look good and not blank delete one that you know what it is on your desktop and make shortcuts from desktop folder and see what happens if that works if it dose do the rest
