No desktop icons

there might be several solutions to your problem. one of the simplest is this: right-click on any part of your desktop if you can, then select properties, go to effects tab and uncheck hide icons when... you might also want to uncheck view my active desktop... under the web tab.

Do you get icons in safe mode? What about your taskbar, do you get that?
