Hello All!
I am currently using MS Windows XP Pro on my HP Desktop and Dell Laptop. I also have cable internet. I recently purchased a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireles Router and Network card. I set up the router and it worked fine for logging on to the internet from my laptop. I wanted to do file sharing with the 2 and found a tutorial on the internet. To no avail it didnt work. neither computer recognized each other. Now i can no longer connect to the router via my laptop. What did I mess up here?

Thanks in Advance

Start --> Run --> ipconfig

A command prompt window will open. The "Default Gateway" is the IP address of your router. Type ping <the IP of the default gateway>.

i went to Netgear and im trying it right now to see if this works

pinged my router and it came back fine but i still cant connect with my laptop.
When I went to Netgear for trouble shooting I looked for this also...

Router WAN Light is Flashing and There is No Connection to Router or Access Point

Since any of these steps might restore connectivity, you may want to retest after each one where you've changed something. Test by pinging the router's or access point's IP. If the ping is successful, then you know that the connection is restored. See Testing Connections with Ping, which has simple instructions (and a few tips for advanced users).

Disable software firewalls and anti-virus software. (This must be done for the rest of the troubleshooting to succeed. After troubleshooting, you will want to consider turning these back on, again.)
Check whether the wireless computer gets a signal from the router or access point. If not then:
2a. Go to any computer that is wired to the router or access point, and open the configuration page to check the SSID, the region, the access list and WEP settings.

2b. Verify all the settings in Step 2a match the settings in the wireless computer.

2c. If WEP is enabled, verify that the WEP settings from Step 2a match the settings in the wireless computer.

If there is a signal from the router or access point to the wireless computer, then check for a valid computer IP address. (If it is 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.X.X, it cannot be a valid IP address.)
Reset the router or access point.

My laptop has an IP Address of 169.254.X.X

yes i pinged the 169.254.X.X and it came back fine. I dont get it i even uninstalled and reinstalled a few times. cant connect. Netgear says to reset the router but I dont even have a reset button in the back of the router. Ive unplugged in order and still no connection to the internet from my laptop.

Comcast cable modem... Netgear 54Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v2

In a simple LAN, say with a couple of computers, the first computer will have an IP address of say 192.168.0.1, the second with 192.168.0.2, the Subnet address would be 255.255.255.0. The Router will also have an IP address of its own that must be different to the joined computers (mine for instance is 192.168.0.100).

On each computer the Default Gateway must point to the Router's IP address. The DNS settings are supplied via your ISP, (mine for instance are 202.153.208.2 and 202.153.208.3, yours of course would be different), and the Router IP address is supplied by the Router manufacturer.

Does Comcast have their own brand of cable modem?
Is the desktop plugged into the Netgear router?
A description on how everything is connected would help.

i understand that but i cant see what my default gateway is for my laptop. Its blank.

CBasic... i have the cable modem pluged into the router and the router into the computer.

Comcast Cable Modem
Scientific Atlantic DXP2100 Series

i cant see what my default gateway is for my laptop. Its blank"

That should be the IP address of your Router.

Are you saying that you are entering it but it is changing to blank?

No. I go to the of my wireless connection and it list
Physical Address, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Server, WINS Server.
Gateway, DNS and WINS are blank

Are you setup for "obtain a IP address automatically" or "Use the following IP address" in the Properties?

The documentation for the router is here.

The reset button is to the right of the WAN connection. You will need a paper clip or something similar to push the reset button.

To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the administration password or IP address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
1.Press and hold the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on (about 10 seconds).
2.Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

This will put it back to factory default.
