I've installed a few 5621 VPN phones and as soon as I've loaded the bin file to make it a VPN phone, the backlight stops working. This has happened to all the ones I've done. I've talked to Avaya Tier 3 and they tell me that theirs works and I can't get an answer on why mine do not or how to fix it. There is no documentation to be found anywhere. Anybody have any ideas on how to get the backlight to work on a 5621 VPN phone?

there is a section in this thread about changing one of the 46xxsettings.txt parameters..

the post is by gknight1 and it says about setting the parameter to 0 to leave the light on...see how you get on, not sure it will work but its worth a shot..

there may be other things that you need to change as part of the VPN txt file settings...make a copy of them before you do

What POE doe you have?

If it's a switch, is it on fullpower?

I'm aware of the 46xxsettings.txt file. I've checked it and it is at its default which is set to 120 minutes. Which means the light should stay on until the phone has been idle for 2 hours. Also with regard to the power, it doesn't matter if it's getting power from a Netgear POE switch or the 1151d power brick, the backlight doesn't work once it has been made a VPN phone.

The 46xxsettings does not work for the remote VPN phones if i'm not mistaken.

Are you using the right bins that came with the version of the IPO?

What i meant to say is that putting the "SET BAKLIGHTOFF 120" in the 46xxsettings.txt not works for VPN phones.

You could try to disable it by putting th ## in front of the SET BAKLIGHTOFF 120

############### DISPLAY BACKLIGHT CONTROL ################
##
## Idle Time Before Turning Off Backlight (minutes)
## Number of minutes without phone activity to wait
## before turning off backlight. A value of 0 means the
## backlight is never turned off. This parameter is
## supported only by phones which have a backlight.
## The default is 120 minutes.
## SET BAKLIGHTOFF 120

I've used the bin files that came with whatever release I was using at the time. Our customer is at 4.2.4 and it doesn't work. I've set up a test phone here in my office which is running 4.2.14 and as soon as I load the VPN bin file, the backlight goes out.

But the phones do work?!

Are you using a different tfpt/http server then the normal phones do?

1. Using the Same File Server for Both VPN and Non VPN IP Phones

If sharing a File Server (TFTP/HTTP) with Non-VPNRemote phones link 46xxvpn.scr
file with the existing 46xxupgrade.scr by adding following lines at the beginning of the
existing 46xxupgrade.scr. (Alternatively backup the existing 46xxupgrade.scr file and
replace it with the file located in the Shared_Server_Script subdirectory.
IF $GROUP SEQ 876 GOTO DEFVPN
GOTO NOVPN
# DEFVPN
GET 46xxvpn.scr
# NOVPN
Now set the group of phones you want to install VPNRemote on, to 876 by pressing
following key sequence when phone is connected to the call server
MUTE 4 7 6 8 7 # 876# [MUTE GROUP# ID#]
[To modify the 46xxupgrade.scr file, first rename the file extension to .txt then open with
Notepad. It is possible to rename the file from 46xxupgrade.scr to 46xxupgrade.scr.txt or
to 46xxupgrade.txt. Either option will be accepted. Once the necessary changes have
been made, and saved, rename the file back to 46xxupgrade.scr]

1. Using a dedicated File Server for VPN IP Phones

If using a dedicated file server for installing VPNRemote firmware, Rename the
46xxvpn.scr file to 46xxupgrade.scr.

I think that Avaya changed it
There where complains that the light stayed on and maybe they just programmed it out !

But then again if they can programme it out then using the baklight setting should be possible too !!!

Tier 3 just told me that they were able to duplicate it in their office. They're pushing it up to R & D.

gnmsnyder... Hi did you ever get an answer? I am having the same issue. I think it worked for me before 4.2 release.

Hi Jeff. I did eventually get Tier III to admit that it was a problem. It took awhile but they were finally able to duplicate it in their shop. The problem got sent up to R&D. Here is the response that I got back. Understand, I haven't had a chance to test this. The customer that was having this issue decided to put in a router at the boss's home and set up a fixed VPN. Therefore, they didn't need the VPN phone, just a 5621. Anyway here is what they said is a temp fix. Hope it helps.

After a lot of investigating and testing, we now know what's causing the failure and how we can recover from it.

If a phone has been previously used, it can corrupt the non-volatile memory for VPN Phone usage. This corruption causes the phone's backlight (when converted to VPN phones) to stop working. Please note that if converting a brand new phone to a VPN phone, this problem will not occur.

At this time there is no fix that can be done in software because the corrupting software is any previously released firmware. There is a way to make the backlight work again and that is by clearing the non-volatile memory. This is a manual procedure after which all the phone settings (VPN settings included) need to be re-provisioned in the phones. The following steps to make the backlight on the affected phones work again:

Steps to clear the memory:
1) At the normal display when a phone is registered enter MUTE CLEAR (25327) # on the phone keypad.
2) The phone will prompt "Clear all values?"
3) Enter # for yes
4) The Phone will prompt "Are you sure?"
5) Enter # for yes
6) The phone will prompt "Clearing values" and then reboot.
7) This will clear all information on the phone and all IP Address, extension number and VPN information will need to be reconfigured.

gnmsnyder...
