NIC Problem: Connected, but no packets in or out

I'm using Win 2003 Server Enterprise on Dell PowerEdge server with Metaframe XP. After a sudden crash, caused by human error I needed to format and reinstall the OS; afterwards I was supposed to restore previously backed up data using Microsoft Backup (comes with windows).
After couple of hours did everything, and it looked good.... until... I discovered (after the reboot), the ethernet was dead! Now, since I made the restore of programs first (tho' apps didn't work without bringing the registry, but I had network), I got to the conlusion there was something bad when restoring the "system state"; but now comes weirdest part of the problem!

As I enter the SAFE MODE on Win 2003, everything is working properly! I can see other computers, browse the internet, etc... but as soon enter in Windows, normal mode... all the activity is ZERO. I recieve 0 packets, can't communicate with any other computer?!

I really don't understand what is happening, don't have an idea of what the solution may be, wondering if anybody had the same problem so could help me out.

The first thing i would do in this case is remove and reinstall the drivers in Windows. I know it worked in safe mode but i would still give that a try. If that does not work then I would get a pci network card and pop in in the machine and see how that acts up in windows. If you see that the pci card works fine in windows then you know to troubleshoot the onboard cards a bit more. But if you add the pci card and it does the same, then I say that you you take a look at the apps that and other hardware that are loading up, there may be a conflict there.

Did it already : Same

Thought about it : The problem is that this Dell server has PCIX type slots, and I can't find any PCI NIC locally.


I have the feeling that has something to do with registry, ... how can I identify the different registry settings for the network connections or settings... ?????

I would try removing tcp/ip and renstalling it ....
There could be a conflict with another driver or device,
try checking device manager also.....Since it worked in safe mode, another driver or the driver you installed could be causing the problem.

Ok, I tried removing and reinstalling the NIC, the driver, etc., but I'm not sure about removing tcp/ip on this 2003 server (is not the domain controler). Please instruct me on removing and reinstalling TCP/IP. (all the help i can find on this matter refers to win 2000 when they are domain controllers, wich is not my case).

Right click on My Network Places
Select properties
Right click on Local Area Connection
Select properties
select tcpip
Click on uninstall
Then reinstall it ....
