I have a couple of questions regarding DNS and routing. I'm trying to install a mail server(for fun) and I am curious what steps I need to take to get it up and running. Here is what I have done so far. I have registered the domain name, installed the mail server, installed DNS on my server, installed a router, and have an ISP, and an external IP addresss. My question is what do I do now to get traffic destined for my domain name to my server. Also, is there a definitive source for DNS, routing, etc... on the net. If not what about some good books. Thanks for all the help.

Have your ISP add an MX record for your Domain to point to your Public IP. Now I'm assuming your Public IP is on the your Router, so forward ports 25 and 110 to the private IP of your mail server. Also add an MX record for your Domain with the name of your mailserver.

A good book for server administration is Mastering Windows 2000 Server by Mark Minasi. For routing, I'd buy a Cisco CCNA-type book that covers the basics and introduces you to the OSI model....

Thanks,
