Hello:

We currently host our own DNS (windows 2000 server) and have decided to use GoDaddy for email hosting only. On their website, they say you need to do the following if you need to retrieve email messages from GoDaddy but host your DNS elsewhere:

---------------------------------
If you're experiencing problems retrieving your email, please update your DNS zone file entries as follows:

MX Modifications:
MX 0 - smtp.secureserver.net
MX 10 - mailstore1.secureserver.net

Cname modifications:
Map mail.XXXInsertDomainHereXXX to pop.secureserver.net
Map email.XXXInsertDomainHereXXX to email.secureserver.net

After your DNS provider has entered these records, please allow 4-8 hours for .COM and .NET domains and about 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions for these changes to complete.
--------------------------------

I understand how to change the MX records, but I am lost on the cname modifications portion. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Brett

Pop does not care what the server name is mapped, so this is more of a convenience for your users. So if my domain was @bigdude.com, then
mail.bigdude.com. IN CNAME pop.secureserver.net.
(personally, I would use:
pop.bigdude.com. IN CNAME pop.secureserver.net.
Now the other might be a VirtualHost web mail server. That might use the called URL to map itself to your domain, so leave it
email.bigdude.com. IN CNAME email.secureserver.net.

You can certainly edit the local hosts (in either Unix or Windows) to try this out.
