I have to add a W2K machine to a network. Do I need to add it to the server, or can I just name it and add it by putting it physically on the network, I have added the domain name etc.

I realise this is a real newbie question, but hope someone can help, I have taken over looking after our small network and am having to learn really fast!

many thanks Kathy R

Add a Win2K PC to a domain
What you must have:
-Access to the Domain
- Administrative account with rights to add PC to the domain

Right click my computer
Click the network ID tab
Click the network ID Button
Follow the Wizard (you will need an account with administrative rights to add a pc to a domain)

Windows will inform you if it successfully joined the domain.

Thank you, I have admin rights and will log on to the domain tomorrow

Don't use the wizard it usually ends up telling you the domain cannot be contacted or you cannot join the domain because of conflicting credentials etc, Much easier it to Click properties instead of Network ID then click the Domain radio button, Type in your domain name, Click Ok then Ok to them 'Welcome to.....' then Ok the 'This computer must be etc etc' and allow machine to reboot. When it restarts click options... Change the Drop down box to show the domain name and logon.
