This has been happing to often, when I create a user account with email (W3K)(E3K sp2) the new user does not show up in the GAL. sometimes for a few days.

After creating a new user, just send an email to to account. If it is not showing up in your GAL, your outlook client is in cached mode (which is the default for Outlook 2003). In a nutshell clients in cached mode get the offline address book which is only updated every 24 hours(by default).

Or ... if you are really really in a hurry, and business permits, just reboot the machine. I know, it's drastic, but it's immediate.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

That's by design. The GAL is built once a day during routing maintenance. If your Outlook is configured for cached mode, it downloads the OAB once a day. So - it's possible to take two days before you see it. You can force the rebuild of the GAL, and you can force the download of the OAB on a per machine basis.

That's only if the mailbox isn't initialized. The RUS only needs to stamp it with an address for it to show up in the GAL. Initialized or not.

Correct, I agree with you Sniper... (initializing mailbox)
Regarding cache mode, my experience has been to install Outlook on desktops with cache mode disabled so that my users don't call the help desk looking for new employees. I only use cache mode on Laptop clients who also work offline. That is the design, for me, that has provided the best results.

well I a using outlook 2002. And you can't send an email to that user because it's not in the GAL.

Outlook 2002 (Outlook XP) still can be in cached mode. Check your profile settings in the Mail Control Panel. Wheter a client is in the GAL or NOT would not stop him/her from receiving mail. Lookup the clients SMTP address in AD and send test mail.

Are you getting NDRs or any error notification?

GAL or not, if you send to the smtp address, it will get there!

Ok, in the control panel under my profile settingsthere is no cache setting.

Here is how to do if from Outlook 2003, may be similar to the version of Outlook you are running.

To verify if you are in cached mode go to Control Panel -> Mail -> Email Accounts -> View or change existing e-mail accounts -> Double-click on the Account. You should see a check box that informs you if cache mode is enabled. If it is, your required re-setup the account with cache mode disabled.

2002 had no cached mode
