I wondering if someone can help me out. I work for a small company with about 300 users. I need to make a decsion to purchase Windows 2000 Server by Client or Server. Any Suggest? Thanks

you need license for both the server and client, besides the server software license, you need to purhcase what's call the CAL (client access lisense) per desktop

there are two different type of lisensing per seat or per server, depending on if your company is going to grow over 300 people and also if you will be adding an additional win2000 server in the future you need to decide which one is good for you, the people who sell the licese can tell you more

Are the users going to be using terminal services on the server? If not, then go by server, this gives you two free accounts for admin. Glen A. Johnson

Jake that's the problem. The company I'm buying the software from is a small company with cheap software. I ask the same thing and really didn't understand the response.

We're only going to use one server and our users are not going to grow from 300. I thought I could just use the Server licenses. I don't remember working in an environment and they had to install on the client on the desktop. We're using this server as a DHCP Server. Nothing else!

Thanks, Guys!

So the users aren't going to be working on the server, correct? Then go server with the two free licenses. Glen A. Johnson

Correct! This is a novell shop. The users are only getting an ip address from this server. If anything I might use it as a backup with Vertias but it's not going to be a working server for the users.

Thanks, again!

Might want to consider using it for dns and wins also. We're moving from a Novell shop to pure W2K, and I find dns and wins here has helped our networking. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
