New to SIP. What to use for SIP domain?

so when adding a sip server what is the format that the doamin should be in?
say your existing windown domain is customer.com do you have to use that? or it doesnt matter, you can use anything or maybe even a variation of the existing customer doamin like sip.customer.com????

all the examples in the documanetion show avaya.com but is that because they are already using avaya.com?

Normally I see customers create a sip domain like your example of sip.customer.com

Depending on the ability of the phone to see a DNS server, and the DNS entries, you'll either use the domain name, (like sip.customer.com above) or the ip address.

If you're not maintaining a DNS server, and a SIP domain, the IP address of the sip server (gateway or PBX) is usually the correct entry.

I am using the sip server for mm single server and will also have meeting exchange express but that connects directly to CM. So I'm not dealing with phones. So do I need to updat something in the DNS server then?? If using an IP adress do I just the sip address for cm and the ses address for MM?

I'd use the IP address of the other system you need to connect to.

If you're connecting a phone to a PBX, you put the IP address of the PBX in the phone's domain.

Similarly, if you're connecting another gateway or device to the PBX, you'd put the IP address of the PBX into the sip domain of the other system.

This way, the SIP device will know where to register.
