I would like to setup RAID 0 (Stripe)

Does it matter if the drives are the same model and
manufacturer?

I currently have 1 drive and was wondering if I can just go and buy a RAID controller card and another same size drive or do I have to go buy a pair of drives of the same brand and type at the same time?

I have looked up reviews and most seem to use identical drives but some of the people I am asking are telling me that it doesnt matter but none of them has tried it thus any information would be very helpful.

Thanks for you help.

I don't think it matters as long as the drives are the same size and speed.

since the only reason you may want to use raid 0 is to improve performance, you should use 2 identical drives.
2 drives of just the same size will work but will not have the same performance as 2 identical. At the speed and performance of todays drives, do you really want to do it?
I would rather run them mirrored.

Thanks for the responce.

I guess it comes down to performance or data integrity.

This lead to another question though :p

Just a little FYI.

I was thinking of getting the WD 120GB 8MB cache drives.
I do a lot of encoding and video editing personally and for
others and was thinking that the RAID 0 would allow me to video edit/encode faster, thus saving time.

After each project I burn the video off thus I was not thinking of having a backup (mirror) setup.

With this additional information, do you think RAID 0 is still justified? I have not used or had any experience with the new 8MB cache drives. In your opinion, do you think the single drive is fast enough?

Thanks again!
