New to Cisco and I have a dumb question 2

Hello everyone, This is my first adventure into tech-tips and I am fairly new to networking so if this question seems like a newbie question just bear with me because this is the first time venturing into routing.

My company wants me to connect 2 T1 lines and give our users VPN capabilities. If I went with a Cisco 2651XM VPN Bundle with the following specs:

Multiservice voice/data integration
VPN access with Firewall and Encryption options
Analog dial access services
Routing with bandwidth management
Inter-VLAN routing
Delivery of high-speed business class DSL access
Cost effective ATM access
Integration of flexible routing and low density switching

Will I still need to buy VPN client software,WICs, and anything else?

Software you can download from Cisco. You would need to buy a T-1 WIC for each router.

Is your only goal to connect 2 T-1's for data and have VPN client access? This seems like a lot of router for that.

What I want to happen is a router that connects a 1720 (T1 connection) and a 1721(T1 Connection) router and will become the main DNS along with allowing VPN access and acces to internet email.

Later the company wants to move from analog communication to data voice capabilities.

They also want to set up internal IM services

any suggestions for this newbie?

OK, maybe I understand. You have two remote locations with incoming T-1's to connect to a main site, right? If so, you need two WICs for the 2651. I think Cisco has a dual-T1 WIC which would be worth a look.

VOIP seems to be a strength of the 2651, so that might be the good choice afterall. I haven't done any voice yet, so I'm not really the one to ask.

As for DNS, the router won't do that. You'll need a DNS server. Most likely your network OS has one (Windows, NetWare, Linux). For internal IM, you can set up jabber (

http://www.jabber.org),

or both GroupWise and Exchange have integrated IM. GW includes it, Exchange later than 2000 has it as an add-on.

the 2651 ia a great choice for voice, but you are very limited on the 1720s. Use Cisco call manager and it won't matter much about the routers as long as the VPN stays up. But that is a question for another time (and forum).

Hope this helps

The Cisco 2651XM comes with a built in VPN Accelartor card with Triple DES, VPN Software and a IOS firewall

You will need to purchase 2 WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 cards if you are not going to use a external CSU/DSU

The Cisco VPN Client is free but there is a 15 dollar charge for the medium
