New server cannot get IPs

Here is my scenario:
Small LAN (5 win2k pro, 2 win2k servers). In our office we have 2 companies, A and B. Company A has 4 pro machines and 1 server. Company B has 1 pro machine and I am still setting up their server. All machinies are using the same SWB DSL from a caymen router to a hub. The new server has active directory set up, but not the DNS or DHCP. Right now all IPs are pulled from SWB dynamically.
My problem is with the new server. It cannot pull IPs for some reason. The NIC in it has a link light, I plugged it straight into the router and it shows a link there. The network properties are configured the same way as all other PCs. I tried taking another machine off the network to see if it was some kind of limit to IPs but still nothing.
We would like to keep using DHCP from SWB, so everyone can log into either domain, if possible.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I am still pretty new to this.
Thanks!

a little more info. When I try to renew through command prompt I get error message: DHCP server unreachable.

I know that you want to run dhcp however did you just try to setup a static ip on the machine for testing? AS you know check all programing and replace patch cables for testing. ( I had a bad cable once ) Jeter@LasVegas.com

I tested all the cable, and even went as far as to make a patch straight from the NIC to the router. I also tried putting a static IP in the range that the rest of the network has. Was unable to ping- timed out. Do the DHCP and DNS have to be set up even when the server is not assigning the IP's. I thought all that info would be pulled from the ISP. Once I have the DHCP and DNS set up hopefully it will click. Any more ideas?

If still cannot ping your self I would try 2 things.

1. Replace the NIC and or reinstall the tcp/ip settings.
2. The router would have to be the one giving the ip's
not the isp. Setup a dhcp pool within the router useing
the assign static ip from the isp. If they do not
provide static then run a provate lan ip with NAT. Jeter@LasVegas.com

I am able to ping the internel ip- 127.0.0.1. The router is a SWB issued Caymen. Would they be willing to tell me how to log into it? Or does anyone else know how to get into it?

If you bought the equipment than they should give you access. Have you tried to telnet into the router?

127.0.0.1 is a loopback ip address.
What ip scheme are you running? Jeter@LasVegas.com

I was able to telnet to tthe router. It seems to be a very basic one. It is running DHCP with 192.168.1.x for the IPs. The router does not seem to be a very good one, I may look into a different one- maybe linksys or netgear?

Mattwray;

I tried for many hours to set up the Cayman 3220 router from PacBell and had similar lack of success getting support from Cayman.

Cayman did not respond directly to calls: they take your number and call you back (maybe). You may not speak to a person then. It may take a day or two or three for the call-back. At that time you may not be at the computer. Sorry. Go to the back of the line again.

The Cayman does have web access: just use its IP. But its menu pages are not, for me, totally clear (their pages do not update each other, so new settings are not reflected in subsequent pages -- argh!) I gave up and got a NetGear for the client. NetGear had 24-hour live support!

Better yet, a little Cisco is a good business choice.

BTW, you mentioned two companies: you won't be mixing subnets on one wire (hub) will you? While possible, it is definitely not recommended. There are subnet addressing issues that are not always obvious.

Best,
Mike

Yes I am going to be mixing the 2 companies on the same wire, but it is not a normal operation. The employees of both are the same people. IE john is a member of company A and compamy B. Don't ask me, I just work here. Thanks for the input on caymen!

Well I reinstalled Win2k today and am still not able to browse the network. I have even gone as far as to set a static IP, connect straight to the router and still cannot ping. I am completely baffled here!

Well I got it. Bad PCI slot if you can believe that!

Mattwray;

I have heard of PCI slots retaining their IP addresses, even after removing the card, such that relocating the card to a new slot (and using the same old IP address) prompts the error message that that number is already taken and might cause conflicts if the old one is activated.

But the good news is that PCI may get a substantial lift up with a new standard, perhaps later this year. It is really, in PC years, old.
