I have a XP-Pro desktop and two XP-Home laptops that wander about the house. The laptops are wireless to a D-Link AP/Router only, no networking between any computers. It took about two hours at least to figure out WPA versus WPA-PSK. Got a "where's the certificate" on WPA originally but after you wander through all the new options it's all there. I settled on WPA-PSK only because it's easier for me to understand when setting up. It use to take about a minute for the laptops to grab on to the AP and now it's there in a couple of seconds. Works great!

This update to Windows XP provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), which is the latest standards-based wireless security solution derived from the IEEE 802.11i standard. It also contains Wireless Provisioning Services (WPS) Information Element support, which enables
improvements in wireless network discover ability

Note:{/b] Service Pack 2 is required.

Thanks bcastner. I was in such a rush this morning I forgot the link to the update. My point is I have typical computers with typical Intel MB, using typical Router/AP and it all works right out of the box(download). In fact I never knew my cheapo D-Link had those capabilities.

It should be noted for all that this Hotfix does quite a bit more than just add support for WPA-2.

It significantly enhances the auto discovery of Access Points, and more robustely autodetermines the available security protocols you can use.

It is worth applying for all and anyone using a wireless connection under XP and Service Pack 2.
