New install - error message sending mail

This is the message i am getting trying to send mail.

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<dell2650main.hartadvisers #5.5.0 smtp;553 hartadvisors.com does not exist>

Now my mx records are still not up but shouldn't I be able to send mail out? Is there something that i didn't setup for SMTP?

I expect the recipient mail server is doing some simple anti spam checks, if there's no record of the domain name or mx record available to their DNS/mail servers, then your email is being dropped as spam.
