I got a nice new dell desktop system, got all my stuff moved over and just realized one of the most critical programs I need will not run correctly. Running the same OS, Windows XP Pro SP2. Fresh install, every other program works fine.

It is a customer management program, sorts files, etc. The problem is when it reads a simple text file it is erroring out saying the file is too big, saying it has more than 2xx,xxx,xxx items. I have tried with files with as little as 2 items. I also took the exact file, sent it over the network to the old desktop running the same program from the same install exe and it processes it flawlessly.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause an error like this? Is it something with new CPUs that make older programs act funny? I have no idea what I am going to do now.. I am just going a little nuts now. I have emailed the company that made the program, but who knows if I will hear anything back.

Greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Thank you

Is it picking up some strange dll due to a registry setting?

Get the process exprlorer from It is similar to task manager but it tells you more info about the process like DLLs used and registry entries used.

Run it up on your old machine and monitor what DLLs the program uses. Then run it up on the new machine and check that the DLLs are the same ones.

Well, I am still totally stumped. I used ProcessExp on both computers and see it accessing no different versions of any dlls. Used all compatibility modes as well.

I have an extra HD in the new computer, so I even made it the master and did a fresh install of XP Pro SP2 and XP Pro w/o SP2. Soon as it booted up I installed the program in question, same error on both installs. Same OS CD that is installed on the other computer that it works on.

So I am assuming this HAS to be something hardware related? But I cannot figure out what would cause the error. The msg is "List count out of bounds (268435456)"

I used the program on the other desktop and used the exact file by loading it through the network, runs fine. tried new, old, every file that works on the other version.. Nothing will run on this new computer. Same error. Everything else works flawless though. Anything else I can try or am I just totally doomed here?

Thanks again

Do both systems have the save file system NTFS or Fat 32 ?

Both NTFS. All DLLs that I can see the program accessing are the exact same vers. I did the fresh isntalls just to make sure something else I installed didn't add something funky, but no luck.. The new system is SATA drives, don't see why that would matter though..

Tried that, I can't see anything it is doing different on this computer than the other. And after trying 2 fresh installs and getting the same message every time I can't come up with anything but hardware. I installed from the same XP Pro CD is that is on the other computer where it runs fine.

no idea what else to try. I even installed it on 2 other dells, 1 of which is new as well and it runs fine on them all. All except the computer I got for myself. Ugh.
