We currently have a DL380 G2 dual 1.4 Xeons with a c drive and raid5. We just got in a new DL380 G4 dual 3.2 Xeons. Can I take the drives out of the G2 and install them on the G4 and expect everything to work, besides some drivers. Should my Data stay intact?

The G2 drivers are Ultra3 and the G4 has Ultra320. I do not plan to mix them.

NO

g3 and newer are only suppose to use 320's
they are not suppose to take older drives

thats not to say they will not but on the later g3's it's actually got a big warning in the docs and in the bay slot

Yes, finally came to the conclusion, what about Ghost 9.0 useable to ghost the Server's C-drive to the new Ultra320?

You will probably find other issues such as different drivers etc... because the G4 server has a different chipset. The image would probably blue screen on bootup for that reason, but it could be worth a try I suppose??

It won't work with an image.
We tried the same action with a sysprep image created on a G3, but the SCSI Controller (6i on a G4, 5i on a G3) creates a BSOD on startup.

The only solution we had was building a new image.

Robert

Done deal, We just built the new G4 and ended up using an array for housing our data and connected it via fiber.
