I have a user who opend the Word application and then opens up a saved document to read the document. Then, without closing the open document, she clicks on open new document which should just bring up a blank screen (or new sheet to write a new document on). Instead, it keeps opening or appending the existing open document. Why is this happening? what can be done to just click on open new document and compose a new document?

What version of office are you using? Also, which method of opening a new document is being used? Are you clicking the button or using the menu bar?

The Os is Windows XP and I am going to assume it is Microsoft office for XP. I saw her click on the menu bar so that is how she is opening a new document.

Ikerr,

I have just verified that the version of Microsoft Word is 2000 (9.0.3821 SR 1). she is running Microsoft XP Home Edition SP2 with current patches. She opens word, and a document that has already been created is displayed. She then goes to the tool bar menu, clicks File new document and she still sees the old document in her window. Do you have any ideas what is happening? thanks, Intuity.

Hi intuity,

It sounds like she has got some document content in her normal.dot, so that new documents both at Word startup and on clicking the toolbar icon come up with that content already in them.

Normal.dot should be in Documents and Settings/(userid)/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates.

You can delete it - or rename it - and Word will create a new (blank) one. Or right click and select Open (NOT New) and then remove all the text and save it.

Enjoy,
Tony
