Hey, I removed a PII266 cpu from an old computer of mine and replaced it with a PII350 chip.
The computer seems to function fine except for two problems:

1 - The bios shows that the chip is running at 240mhz
2 - It brings up an L2 chache error on boot, although I can skip this and continue booting.

Any suggestions?

P.S. This is all old hardware so thats why I'm tinkering with it even though I dont really know what I'm doing!

Well, the first, most obvious question is, does the motherboard support the PII-350? I know my old PII-266 will only support up to 333MHz. If it does, is it auto detecting or do you have to set things like core voltage and clock multiplier manually?

Well, its auto-detecting, and I dont know if the motherboard supports 350mhz. If it doesnt support more than 333mhz can I still tweak it to run at 333? The system is running extremely smoothly and plenty fast even though it reports its running at only 240mhz in the bios.
Oh and the bios doesnt seem to have many options...

I'm not entirely up on the tweaks that Intel made to the P-II platform as it evolved- I wonder if there is a larger cache in the later models? Also possible that there really is a problem in the L2 chache. Do you have the MoBo docs? Any switches or jumpers to set? If it doesn't support the higher speed it ought to run just fine at a lower speed, I would think.

Hmm, no there arn't any jumpers or anything to switch (I already checked!) but I decided not to worry about it too much. Besides the one error, the system runs a lot better than it used too and thats all I care about.
Thanks!

Pity about the speed drop, but look at it this way: The CPU is grossly underclocked and as such will probably last forever as well as being very stable. It may even run without a fan! (But don't try it unless you know the chip temperature.)
I like it! My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

I think updating your bios will probably solve the problem.
I seems that the CPU is wrongly detected due to a problem in the BIOS software since Pentium II 350 was not known when your motherboard was manufactured
