Hi I'm building a computer for my friend and right now I am trying to boot up with a boot disk that I have. It gives me an I/O Error.

This is what I've done so far...

made sure the disk was in, made sure it worked.

Checked the pin connectors numerous times. They are seated fine.

Switched out cables using ones that I currently have working on the computer I am using now and another one.

Switched out working FDD from 2 existing computers.

What else should I check? How do I possibly make sure that it's not the MB FDD controller? It's the last hting I really need to go wrong...

Any other ideas?

Are you sure the cables are plugged in the correct way round ?

Can you boot your friends computer useing the same floppy? This would test the floppy itself. If it will then the floppy is ok and you would have a drive problem.

Does the light come on on the floppy drive when you try to boot the system?

Does the light come on and stay on during the boot process?

If you are absolutly positive the cables are setup right, and you have tryed multiple drives, the next step is to check the BIOS to see if the settigs are correct and are on the correct drive letter. If your floppy drive is connected to the ribion cable with the twist it should be A if it is on the connector without the twist it will be B. Ensure that the settings in BIOS are the correct size normally 1.44 meg for a standard floppy and set to the correct drive letter.

To find the "twist" in the drive cable look for a place that has the ribbion cable devided into three sections. The center section will be twisted or turned 180.

I haven't checked the floppy itself but I had a minor success before using the same disk on the same system but when I rebooted to try again was when I got the disk i/o error - and everytime after.

The light does come on the drive but it doesn't stay on, it does its usual "come on when it's working" routine, not the solid greenlight.

I checked the bios multiple times and eventually just set the bios to the defaults it came with which I have going the first time when it worked ok (but I had another problem).

I'm just trying to rule out a bad floppy adapter on the motherboard.

Tonight I'm replacing a motherboard for a customer that had the same problems. I originally went out there for a floppy and put a new one in and that did the same thing it would light up and act like it was going to read but it would pass and boot into windows. I do think it could be the controller. I would clear the cmos with the jumper and take out the battery.

Try swapping a new stick of memory into the computer motherboard. You should also try a different data cable since they dont cost much. Bad memory can cause an I/O error. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
