I am trying to create a new 2003 based domain inside an existing 2000 based active directory. I have ran both adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep on the schema master server and both operations completed without errors. If I open Active Directory Users and Computers I can see 2003 objects such as the inetorgperson. I cannot however create them.

When I try and install my new 2003 based domain it tells me that the schema has not been prepared.

Can anyone help? Microsoft tech support site simple provides how to run adprep rather than assisting with when you have run it and it hasnt worked!

Many thanks

I had a similar problem with the upgrading of 2000 to 2003. This was caused by a user getting on the system while running adprep. Luckily I had made a backup of system state so a restore was possible. Having been bitten once I now remove the network cable when running adprep.

Thanks Pytchley. I had taken that precaution. I managed to speak to a friend in another company who had experienced this problem. It turns out the he version of adprep that is on the 2003 R2 server cd is the wrong one (its the one for R1 I believe). Instead you run adprep from the second cd cmpnents\r2\adprep folder.

One would think that someone at microsoft would have the common sense to put the right version on the CD (or at least include a support doc relating to the issue on their website but apparently not!

Thanks, trevorh13! I had this exact same issue. Microsoft was not very clear in regards to R2, and I had been banging my head for 2 days, about to rebuild the entire domain from scratch!
