NETX can't find server 2

Hey folks...newbie in this forum...please be kind.

I have a bunch of old IBM PC-340's (P-100) that I'm using to log into an old Novell 3.12 server using the "Previous MSDOS" menu option on Windows 95. The NIC's are ATI 2500's. All but one of them work fine. Can't figure out why the one system loads everything until it hits NETX...which says it can't find the server. I'm going to try swapping out the NIC with a new one and possibly do a BIOS flash today, but does anyone have any other suggestions that I might try?

Are you using NETX on all of the ones that are connecting? NETX was replaced with the VLM technology, but NETX should still work. Have you checked to make sure that NET.CFG has the right frame type referenced? One other possibility is that NETX, if I remember right, requires a LASTDRIVE = E statement in config.sys of the client machine, not a LASTDRIVE = Z as with the VLM client.

Netx is ancient. Don't you have to recompile the configuration every time you make a small change? I can't remember, but it seems like you do.

Agree with Iolair's first point - look at the frame type and other contents of net.cfg (server name, for example).

Lastdrive shouldn't matter for connecting - it just won't be able to map any drives if they have all been given to DOS in config.sys but it will still connect and log in.

Other than that - bad connection or bad nic.

Fixed it...the PC was on the other side of a hub from the rest of the PC's. I guess it was just one jump too many for the ATI card. Replaced it with a Netgear NIC and everything worked first time.
To answer everyone's question regarding NETX, yeah, I'm still using it. The old Novell server is only used for one particular program that's been running pretty much continuously since 1996...I expect the old gal to crash any day now. Everything else is on a Windows server. Since NETX works, I figure...if it ain't broke, why try fixing it.

I'll put up 5 bucks that says it won't die until it has an actual hardware failure. NetWare 3.12 is solid.

That's what I meant. The server has been running just about continuously for about 7 years with no maintenance done on it whatsoever. I't had at most maybe a week's worth of down time during power failures, etc. Netware has done an outstanding job, I never have problems with it. I'm just not sure about how much longer the hard drive can keep spinning without a failure.
